Eagle Lake is surrounded by the Lassen National Forest.

Lassen National Forest

Lassen National Forest lies at the heart of one of California's most fascinating areas—called the Crossroads. The granite of the Sierra, the lava of the Cascades, the Modoc Plateau and the Great Basin meet and blend, providing great scenic and recreational opportunities. Adventures include hunting, fishing, boating, bicycling, hiking, kiting, windsurfing, exploring or just relaxing.

McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park

The park is within the Cascade Range and Modoc Plateau natural region, with forest and five miles of streamside and lake shoreline, including a portion of Lake Britton.

The park's centerpiece is the 129-foot Burney Falls, which is not the highest or largest waterfall in the state, but possibly the most beautiful. Additional water comes from springs, joining to create a mist-filled basin. Burney Creek originates from the park's underground springs and flows to Lake Britton, getting larger along the way to the majestic falls.

The park's landscape was created by volcanic activity as well as erosion from weather and streams. This volcanic region is surrounded by mountain peaks and is covered by black volcanic rock, or basalt. Created over a million years ago, the layered, porous basalt retains rainwater and snow melt, which forms a large underground reservoir.

Bizz Johnson National Recreation Trail

The 30-mile trail is used by hikers, mountain bikers, equestrians, and cross-country skiers. For the first 16 miles, the trail follows the Susan River. As it winds through the rugged Susan River Canyon, the trail crosses the river 12 times on bridges and trestles and passes through two tunnels. The landscape is a combination of semi-arid canyon and upland forests of pine and firs. The trail has four distinct
seasons because of the high altitude.

Lassen Volcanic National Park

To visit Lassen Volcanic National Park is to witness a brief moment in the ancient battle between the earth shaping forces of creation and destruction in Northern California. Nestled within Lassen's peaceful forests and untouched wilderness, hissing fumaroles and boiling mud pots still shape and change the land, evidence of Lassen's long fiery and active past.
